About the author

Welcome to my newly updated About page. I am Maximillian Scot, just another soul trying to appreciate this world until being called home. Thoughtsalone is for anyone who contemplates the mystery of his or her own unique existence while realizing that we are also all simultaneously connected to everyone and everything else.

Mine has been a nontraditional path. I grew up in a large working class family with mixed Hessian mercenary and Amish pacifist roots in Appalachia. At 18 I left home to study nuclear engineering, then served 20 years as an Army officer working and fighting in Europe, the Middle East, Far East, Africa, and central Asia. After retirement, I became a consultant and international businessman returning to where I once fought to make friends. Now I am a sometimes teacher, and full time outpatient therapist working with a wide variety of individual and family clients. Along the way I have met an incredible assortment of people, and been privileged to see and experience first-hand diverse cultures around the world. I have loved, lost, succeeded, failed, and undergone an often mystifying spiritual journey. Through it all, my most rewarding moments have been as a husband, father, brother, and friend.

Regardless of gender, race, occupation, or creed, each of us lives in the illusion of his own little world.  It’s when we share or meet face to face, that we realize – despite our perceived separateness – that we are all manifestations of the same wandering spirit. For the people I’ve loved, for my brothers in arms, and for any soul who finds comfort and solace in knowing we are not alone, I share these thoughts.

…But mostly I do it for my own peace of mind as I continue my journey to find the way back home.

Hi Max, Your words and pics inspire me, so I would like to nominate you for the ‘very inspiring blogger’ award. (It’s ok if you don’t wanna accept it/ pay it forward) but I just wanted to say thanks for your inspiring blog 🙂

Hello there, you are clearly someone with solid opinions and plenty of experience and knowledge to back it up. I recently asked my followers to participate in a poll, and while I’ve had a good number of votes, many have opted out. Some people are just reluctant to participate, I guess. I’m trying to find “deep thinkers” around WP who might be willing to stop by my blog and give their answer. It’s totally anonymous, and I don’t know who votes what. All I see are how many votes I’ve had. I’m going to stick a link here to my post with the poll and maybe you’d be kind enough to click it according to your choice? My name is Tilda, by the way. 🙂 Here’s my poll if you would be so kind to make a vote. http://tfaswift.wordpress.com/2012/10/16/do-you-believe-1/ Either way, best of luck with your journey home! 🙂

Hi Max, your blog and thoughts are inspiring. I look forward to reading more of your posts. 🙂

Thank you for the kind words and for stopping by my blog. I also like your post on positivity. Like I’ve said before, the world is what it is, but our perceptions are what we make them.

      • inspire1life 2012/10/23 at 14:49 #

Thanks for the gentle reminder – that is very true. Our perception of reality is based on the culmination of our experiences. Thanks also for following my blog.

I served myself – Navy – Cold War stuff. Was in combat that no one has ever heard about [Turns out the “Cold” war wasn’t so cold in the spots I was ordered to visit] In any event, I, too, discovered that no one really had much more than a pat on the back or a shoulder shrug when I returned. I’ve been re-inventing myself ever since. I like your blog – keep up the good work!

    wandered through the Army myself
last of the WAC”s, after my battalion in basic training no more….
born in military life… served time…. saw more than I should have
and as most still hear…feel the sounds of revele, retreat, and taps…
to be that immortal again ….
    I like your thoughts…your blog….Thank you for your service…

The beer, the shades, the patio, the backyard: my favorite place to be and breathe by far.
“we are all manifestations of the same wandering spirit” <- I love that!
Beautiful thoughts and words, Max! I look forward to seeing where your path will lead you.

Your site is interesting and in all honesty I don’t get that upset. I posted this a while back when I was being ignored by a bunch of my followers. I just asked all new followers to read it and the majority of them decide not to follow me 🙂
