Every once in awhile you look back and think,  “so that‘s what got me here…thank you, God.”

Memories of war

12 May

wpid-2014-05-12-00.12.55.jpg.jpegMemories here and there,
Random bits of disjointed history,
Faces, a few names.
You know it was a continuous flow
But somehow you only remember pieces and parts,
The impressions of another time
That make you who you are.

You can recount the good stuff most of the time
– Camradery and crazy, shared suffering and laughs.
You try to forget the bad
– Chaos, corruption, ideals and innocence lost –
But it’s always there waiting in the darkness
When only the ceiling fan sees you stare
And no one hears you cry.

As time goes on you try to put it all together
To find some meaning,
But you’re not sure there is one.
Then it hits you that most of your life is already gone,
Fading with the memories,
So you try to hold onto people and places you sort of recall
At least for now.

You tell yourself war stories to other people,
The inspired, bored, or entertained,
But only those who’ve been there really understand
That the parts that seem impossible are most likely true,
And those deemed more plausible are probably not.
We don’t have to make this shit up.
It is what it is.wpid-20140511_202142.jpg
The fact that we’ve been through hard times, or that we remember them in the still of the night does not mean we have problems. On the contrary, I have concern for those who go through hard times and somehow block it off. Vishnu, Christ, and Mohamed all cried for the suffering of their people, yet they are considered among the most enlightened. Could those of us with lesser spirits who have been through war and survived do any less? Embrace the moment but know who you are and where you’ve come from. To remember our experiences and keep them in perspective while living in today is the real meaning of peace.
