Happiness and self doubt

8 May

It finally dawned on me, I’m happy and at peace. It makes it hard to write. Others who are already understand. People who aren’t won’t get it anyway. True happiness and peace don’t arise from the situation. One’s circumstance constantly changes, so if your center is dependent on it, you will never find it. (On the other hand, many people thrive on drama and victimhood, happiness and peace are anathema to them anyway.)

Lately I’ve been taking time for little things. I recently returned to an old hobby I very much enjoy. I’ve been fixing things and doing chores that have been waiting a long time, and just as importantly, I’ve been discarding things that can’t be fixed. I’ve been reading more, enjoying time with my wife, and indulging in long conversations with close friends, people who light up my life in a very real way. (As an aside, I’ve been told that some readers, women in particular, resent the good relationship I have with my wife. If that’s true, it is so sad. My heart goes out to them, but I’m not going to pretend to be miserable just so someone else can pretend to be happy.)

So what’s the point of all this? Yesterday I spent a large part of the day preparing a piece on self doubt. I felt it was too long (yes, the irony struck me too), so here’s the bottomline. Sometimes self doubt is good. You’re not Superman (or Superwoman) and you can’t do everything you want. Getting familiar with your shortcomings ensures they’re no longer something to be afraid of. With a realistic self assessment, you can then figure out how to do whatever needs done. In that way self doubt breeds confidence. It might sound odd, but it’s true. Confidence begets peace, peace brings happiness.

Remember: the fact that you can’t do it all doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. You plainly are not always right, but that doesn’t mean you’re always wrong. And just because you don’t know everything doesn’t mean you know nothing. Contrary to what you might think, you should be your own worst critic. But like my father told me: you’re no better than anyone else, and you’re no worse either. So being tough on yourself shouldn’t diminish your self worth. You’re not the center of the universe, and life doesn’t revolve around you. When you finally get comfortable with that, you’ll find you can be happy, at peace, and joyful for others whatever life brings. Namaste.
And here’s two versions of one of my favorite songs to make you smile 🙂

You don’t need religion to have morals. If you can’t determine right from wrong, then you lack empathy, not religion
